Thanks everyone. There's nothing to be done, but at the moment she's not in pain and is happy to go for walks and played with Flossie while she was there. She can eat soft stuff like chicken (the mass in her lung is what was impinging on her gullet I think) so for now my sister will just carry on as before. If it's slow growing Bella may have another summer; if not, it could be weeks.
We realised how lucky we've been until now - my sister and I have had 6 dogs between us, and this will be the first time the dog hasn't made it to a ripe old age

It is sad, LD. I'm sure your sister will ensure that Bella does not suffer any avoidable pain.
It must be like humans - sometimes these things are just luck of the draw.

Only eight, RS, and very youthful in her behaviour - she'll hunt out and fetch a ball non-stop if you're prepared to throw it for her!
On a lighter note, Floss and I had a really nice walk today. We often meet Ollie, a working Cocker and his owner. Ollie has been trained to take part in spaniel scurries but doesn't work on actual shoots. Anyway, his owner has acquired Toby, a year old Cocker has already had two owners because 'he chewed things and wouldn't walk nicely' - in other words, neither of the previous owners had any idea what a working Cocker puppy might need :-(. He hasn't been very well socialised either - he was walked mainly on the lead - but he and Flossie had a nice run around, taking it in turns to be the chaser and the chased. I'm sure he'll do well with Ollie and his owner.
Then we went into the meadow where there's a field pond. Floss is in her depth for all but a tiny part of it. She inevitably found me a stick to throw in the water for her to fetch and she had a lot of fun until the stick landed in the deepest part of the water. She got within a foot of the stick but just couldn't bring herself to swim to pick it up! She barked at it - that didn't work. She came out and went in from a different angle - that didn't work. Eventually I led her round to the other side of the pond where all her jumping around had made it drift into slightly shallower water and she could grab it at last :-). She is funny - she adores jumping around in the water but just could *not* go out of her depth, desperate though she was to get her stick

How sweet.. barking at the stick I think Wanda would use logic like that too
In fact I think Wanda and Flossie would get on famously with that chasing about.
Perhaps instead of a Thames Bridges Run this thread's regulars need a Woof Bark and Whine dog walk.....
