I had a crisis of confidence today; I was supposed to do the training walk on the new harness down the road to my post box but only got a little way because I was so tense I was communicating to Bryony and it all went t*ts up.
However, I decided to have another try on the big lawn I use for wedding receptions and it went a little better; I think I felt safer as there was no risk of meeting anyone or escape... I realise in my head that I am being completely ridiculous but some things are not about logic. Hopefully I can try again tomorrow in the same safe feeling environment

Lovely picture of Jess GM. Wanda knew paw from Battersea and now knows 'other paw' too and is getting to grips with 'both paws' Usually though once she has offered one paw she will go through the whole repertoire of paws without being asked as she is aware that this will usually elicit treats of some description For everything else with Good Citizen we say 'Inspection' to cover everything - we're very lucky in that although she doesn't really enjoy being 'inspected' by us or the vet, she will put up with it

D2 - work on it in the field - you are lucky to have the space you do for these training exercises and then progress to the next stage when you (and she) are ready.
The space you have will be a huge bonus for training I'm sure, practising in a domestic average size garden is no preparation whatsoever as we found when we moved from training in the garden to training on the local playing field

Will do, I was so upset with myself for being so pathetic. Trouble is its so important for the future to get it right.......... I'm glad I had the gumption to have another go and as you say I'm very lucky to have the field etc to use. I'm over thinking the whole thing perhaps.

You are far from pathetic. And you've never failed a dog yet as far as I can make out. I agree with the Baroness- work in the field until you are confident. There WILL be distractions for Briony in a field even if you can't see them!
Yes you're over thinkng, but I would too!

This puppy training lark really is a 2 way thing. I need training just as much as Charlie.
This afternoon, a van delivered a parcel. The man rang the bell, left the parcel on the doorstep and was back in his van by the time I opened the door. Charlie dashed out between my legs and raced at the van. Instead of assertively doing our recall routine, I charged after him shouting "No Charlie! Come back! Stop!" and so on. Two minutes of bedlam ensued, Charlie thoroughly enjoying the impromptu game of chase. He took some catching! The van driver, to his credit, sat watching in his van and didn't start the engine until I'd waved and shouted thank you. Much embarrassed!
I'm still reading back over the thread - around page 220 now. Do any of you ever go back and remind yourselves what it was like in the early days and how much you've progressed? It's so reassuring to read that you've had exactly the same issues that I'm now having and come through them OK!

I was just thinking about you AtC.... I haven't tried reading the thread I already have the impending sense of dread for what is yet to come.
Its that time of day when I have to sit on a hard chair or stand up to save my own skin......

I did once start reading back through but didn't have the time to read it all from start to finish - I didn't know until it was mentioned here that you could select a page to read.
Don't think much of your parcel man if he rang the bell left the parcel and got back in his van as quick as he could - what if you hadn't been in and the parcel had then got wet/been nicked? Or perhaps he knew a lively puppy was about to come tearing out and didn't want to be on the receiving end of Charlie's excitement
