Posted a long reply but the wifi dropped out but along the lines of LDs advice. When I have a better signal I wil tell the story of letting Wanda off the lead for the first time on what we thought was a safe enclosed path

We let marvin off the lead on the field from a very early age, he never really strayed far at first, then as he became more confident he went further but was very good st recall the majority of time

....Alice, you may by now be up to the thread pages where I bewail the fact that Flossie would run the length of the rec (minimum four football pitches long) to say hello to people she regarded as more fun/interesting/had better treats than me. She is still 'comfortable' with a big distance between us at times, but nowadays I don't stress about it. I've even been known to shout 'Bye Flossie' and walk out of sight :-0. That usually brings her running

Interesting! Thanks for all the suggestions, which I have read and inwardly digested.
I'm trying to think of a safe, enclosed space we could go to... Definitely won't be trying it on my own though. Perhaps at the weekend when MrAtC's back.
Do tell your story if you get a moment Baroness! And yes, beagles Sharkie - I have a friend with a beagle and it's thoughts of Billy's antics that make me nervous!

Charlie update: As he's stopped peeing through the night, I gave in and let him sleep in the dining room, on the carpet under the table. A couple of whimpers as I shut the door but then a quiet and peaceful night. He's slept in there for the last 3 nights and seems much happier. "Pick your battles" - there was something about the utility room that he really didn't like and I have to accept he was never going to get used to it. He still won't go near his bed (except to hump it), not sure what I'll do if/when he needs to go into kennels and they ask me to bring his bed along...
He was much better behaved at puppy party last night, madly excited when we first got there but calmed down and apart from incessant wriggling stayed on my knee without yapping the place down whilst the other pups had their goes. Puppy School tonight - I need to ask Cushla how to get him to approach other dogs/people without going berserk.
Just back from another drag round the village. I wonder if we're trying to go too far? It seems like a short walk to me but I wore garmin today out of curiosity and it was almost exactly 1 mile. Perhaps I should shorten it for now?
I'm still enjoying reading of all your antics from a couple of years ago, especially Tav H's Teddy. He sounds very similar to Charlie in both looks and attitude! I'm impatient to know - did he ever get used to going for walks?

If he needs to go into kennels he might be happy with an old T shirt to sleep on that you have worn for a few days beforehand as then it will remind him of you. At least that's what the kennels advised for the one night Wanda had to spend there once. Obviously I have no idea whether it made any difference or not, but it made me feel better about leaving her

We have just discovered that Wanda can spell!!!
Wanda really loves the landlord of our local pub, Mick. She used to try to go into the pub every time we walked past (embarrassing when she was with our dog walker & tried to drag her in there!). She soon understood what 'go to the pub' meant and also picked up on 'lets go and see Mick'. If we say that to her and put her lead on she drags us straight to the pub! We now spell M- I - C - K when talking about him and now Wanda has started looking up hopefully every time we do so.

Dog thread, perfect! I have a cockapoo and she is turning 1 and still has a mental episode when any of us leave the house, howling etc, so seems just very clingy and just wants to be with us all the time. Will she ever get independent?

Baroness we have to spell W A L K, D I N N E R and O U T
Update on Bella - she has seen the vet, who is concerned but can't locate the problem. She's having an ultrasound scan on Monday. One theory is that having eaten tons of windfall plums last autumn she has plum stones lodged somewhere :-0. In a way I hope that's the answer as it would be rectifiable -I hope.
