Help please
part of our homework this week is walking on a loose lead.........
Inside one of my barns where there is 'no distraction'; dog on left, loose lead, walk fast, if she gets in front stop and direct her back in a circle to the correct position using a tempting treat, sit treat praise and set off again.
not
no matter how exciting I make myself she just sits down and refuses to move, obv I'm not allowed to pull on lead to even start her off.... so......... ?

This is part of our homework too. I can only get Charlie to move by offering him a "high end" treat - cheese or chicken roll. Normal biscuit-type treats don't cut it. We're supposed to move 4 steps then stop - sit - treat - start again. It's hard work.

Bryony couldn't care less about a treat in this scenario....... and I've tried all sorts of treats plus doing the exercise on a very empty stomach!

Hmm that's hard if she is not food motivated. We are always encouraged to use the very best treats and right on the nose for new exercises (in our case, liver cake or something very smelly) and a friend of mine always swears by missing the dog's meal before training so it goes to class on an empty stomach.
Could you perhaps throw the treat onto the floor slightly ahead of you to start her off?

Agree it's hard if treats don't work. You can reward with a game but that won't work in this situation.... hmm.
Mind you Jess didn't seem very treats motivated to begin with - until Cyclops recommended liver cake - which has always worked - well - a treat.

I wonder if going backwards first might help? It's a version of what I know as 'puppy recall'. You walk backwards and call her to you as you continue to go backwards (Bryony would be on a loose lead at this point.) Then when she's up and moving, you can go forward into the exercise you actually want to practise.

Please can you tell me about liver cake? I did try smoked mackerel which always worked with other dogs!

Sharkie - I was just about to suggest liver cake. A treat so smelly it's irresistible!
