Yes, we used a baby gate to begin with. Otherwise it has to be the painstaking, long winded process of 'No!' And it's much harder teachng 'nos' than it is teaching do-this-insteads (difficult one with stairs)

The Baroness will have some good ideas - as Wanda is not allowed upstairs.

I was going to comment from my now vast training knowledge and skills but as I fell asleep on the sofa at lunch time and woke up to find a dog on my lap I'll keep quiet and look out for the right answer. :)

I'm afraid we used a stair gate for getting on for two years! But now it has been taken away Wanda knows she is not allowed upstairs.

Also once she had learned the commands wait and stay I would ask her to wait or stay and go upstairs for a few minutes, or seconds even, to start with then come down again and praise her.

She will now lie in what looks like a most uncomfortable position on the bottom stair if I have gone upstairs and asked her to wait, but at night for example she is shut in the kitchen anyway so she can't come upstairs. I am fairly sure that if the kitchen door wasn't shut she would come upstairs when she woke up in the morning (regardless of what time that might be) just to check that we were still here and hadn't forgotten to get her breakfast :-)

Oh lawks, sounds like I need to get a gate then. I thought those days were well behind me. I suppose it will come in handy for other things too

We used a stair gate too, AtC. It made life easier when Leah was little. She did come up once house trained and when she would follow instructions.

I can see why Alice might not want Charlie upstairs for allergy reasons, but we have never barred our dogs. Flossie comes up but if I'm in the shower or something she just lies on the landing until I'm ready to go back downstairs. She wouldn't go upstairs if neither of us is up there.

Actually LD, Jess is the same - she has the run of most of the house but generally likes to be where we are - or where she can keep and eye on proceedings (ie landings and doorways) We just shut a door if we don't want her in a certain room.

Like most dogs I've known Jess is quite interested in following people into loos!
