I’m a bit worried about Ernie. He’s obviously in quite a lot of pain but I can’t work out what hurts. He definitely had a sore paw/leg yesterday on the evening walk but he seemed fine later. Today we did a 3 hr walk including chasing a ball at the beach. He seemed ok. All afternoon he’s been giving little yelps and he’s now seriously subdued.

It's awful when you don't know what's wrong. Kipps trapped his nerve in his back a few times in his lifetime and there was nothing we could do for him but he was in agony. Lasted for days/weeks a time. Whenever we took him to vets, he managed to recover enough for them to never see how bad it was. Hope Ernie feels better soon!

Someone once mentioned on here that medicating a dog yourself is illegal but I know a lot of farmers use aspirin for pain. Amazon sell doggy aspirin so I am assuming it's okay - amazon.co.uk

Used to use aspirin with Kipps now and again.

Poor Ernie. Maybe it's just a slightly pulled hammie or something :-(

Weird thing is he’s quite happily jumping off and on the sofa and even going up the stairs. He’s been under the dining table whilst I potter in the kitchen this afternoon and every now and then he yelps. I think maybe when he goes to get up.

No bits of grit hidden away in the depths of his paws?

Well he still keeps yelping randomly. I've given him a good check over. He was very good, even presenting his front paws for inspection. He resolutely refused to lift his back right paw for inspection, however I've just had a look whilst he was lying down and nothing obvious on the pad (and no yelp). He was bounding about at the beach on our morning walk and kept presenting me with a stick to throw (which I refused to do). The question is do I leave it a day or 2 to see if whatever it is sorts itself out, or go to the vet who will almost certainly give him pain relief (they always give him some sort of meds when we go)? Dogs are such a bloomin' worry aren't they?

It's a rare visit to vet for either dog or cat that doesn't come away with loxicom or metacalm (+ antibiotic shot for good measure). I'd phone them, if anything like ours at the moment they are almost triaging over the phone to decide urgency if appointment needed.

I think I would phone the vet too, if he’s not his usual self.
