Agree with D2- the best bones are proper raw ones from the butchers - Morrisons do them too! (for stock) and some petfood suppliers do them. They will be stored in a freezer in that case. Raw bones need matching to size of dog - but beef marrow bones go down best of all I think. |

Wanda sometimes has raw bones (we have one in the freezer at the moment) but they get smelly quite quickly and I'm reluctant to leave them in the garden in case they attract rats but I don't really want them in the house either. Ever since we have had Wanda (3 years) she has had a plastic bone similar to the nylabone (she had a nylabone but isn't interested in it) the one we have is called a 'marrow bone' (but it's a plastic bone!!). We are only on our 4th one and it gets chewed a lot! Bits of plastic do come off it and some we find and throw away but others I assume get eaten (we've had no ill effects). The trouble with the rawhide 'chew' I gave her yesterday was that I don't think much actual chewing happened at all. She just ate the lot. |

Just in case anyone's interested, there's a regular dog-themed phone in on BBC Radio London. It's on the Jo Good show on Thursday at 3-4pm. The recent shows are all available on podcast, and you can skip through to the final hour for the doggie bits. It coincides with my journey home from work, so I often listen. A dog behaviour expert is a regular and interesting guest. Last week's show: bbc.co.uk We're looking after a smooth haired Hungarian Vizla. He's lovely, but a bit too keen on our pet rats. We've had to lock them in the upstairs bathroom for peace and quiet. |

I've never listened to that programme (not being in London) but someone I know who works in the dog 'healthcare' industry is an occasional guest on it. I think it used to be late at night originally... glad to hear it is now more 'mainstream'!

I shall ask about raw bones next time I'm in Morrisons! There's also a rather lovely butcher in town, might be worth paying him a visit. Thank you. Stupidly, it hadn't occurred to me to get a proper bone from a butcher, like in the olden days... That radio programme sounds interesting, I'll have a look for Radio London podcasts! |

Sometimes butchers will put a bucket of bones outside the shop for dog owners to help themselves (or give some loose change for a charity tin in the shop). There is a butcher in Sheringham that does that and Wanda always sticks her head in the bucket when we pass although at the time of day we go past it's usually empty. The butcher on our local market does the same but doesn't ask for donations or anything (although I will usually try to buy something else from him at the same time rather than just take a bone!) |

Flossie has some sterilized bones which she will occasionally dig out of her toybox and have a bit of a chew on, but she seemed to get chewing out of her system when she chewed the wicker sofa to bits as a puppy

Jet chews (eats) rawhide twists. They don;t last long. We gave him raw bones when he was younger and he chipped his teeth.
