Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I'm taking a break because work is nuts this week with me teaching up to 7 hours a day - online to Greenland.

I've actually been thinking about the break system and I do think I abuse it a bit by taking breaks just because I cba or half some half-baked excuses for not wanting to try every week. Maybe there should be a maximum of, say, 5 breaks a year. I'd never be up where I am if I had to compete every week. I was proper injured this summer but I don't have a good reason this week.

However, as long as it is permitted, I'll keep doing it.

Thoughts?

No issue at all from me... I couldn’t care less if people take breaks or not. It was a pretty epic finish to the game so wasn’t sure if you were broken after it...

I play every week because it gives me something to help with my training. Some weeks I win and some I lose. As long as I have a good game, I’m fine with that. Breaks increase the chance of it being a good even game week.

I’d rather someone only plays 10 good weeks a year than feel they have to play at least 47 weeks a year and have mismatches when injured or life gets in the way

I'm taking a break so I can run out of grid for my own sanity, I've played 17 WSW games on the trot, and the final straw was having to run a half marathon in grid this morning. Just 1 week break though, might take a run to the coast on Friday for the first time in weeks.

I do enjoy on 'breaks' going running in more interesting places - though I can also do that if I'm getting thrashed and have given up by Saturday. It is less relevant in winter when they are inaccessible anyway.

I'm pretty sure I run more when I'm playing though. I probably would have skipped my run yesterday (or only gone 5k) if I hadn't had the motivation of pushing Dave to the wire.

It's a tricky balance to achieve. I've been guilty in the past of thinking 'I won't be able to compete properly (whatever that means) this week so I'll take a break' - on the one hand this benefits others who get a better game than they otherwise might but, on the other, it also serves to maintain my ranking higher than perhaps it would be otherwise. Over time, I began to feel uncomfortable with this.

More recently, I've generally only taken a break in order to protect myself from temptation following an injury - I've also allowed myself back into the game earlier than I previously may have done so that I can lose a few points and drop down the rankings a bit to a level suited to my rehab.

One exception to this was a week I was likely to progress in the multiplayer but knew I couldn't compete the following week. I took a break to allow somebody else the multiplayer place.

I think all this is saying is that there are many reasons for taking a break. I don't believe there is (or ever should be) a 'right' approach and, on balance, wouldn't want to see them restricted globally. We all eventually find our natural level in the rankings and a level of competition commensurate with that level - it's reasonable, I think, for each of us to set our own limits/conditions and behave accordingly.

I took a break last week as I was away from home. I'd moved my grid the week before so couldn't move it to my holiday location until midweek, which would then have meant I couldn't move it home again until Thursday this week. I figured it was easier to drop out for a week than mess up 2 weeks of games for my opponents.
I'd vote to leave things as they are and trust that folk won't be deliberately playing the system to gain unfair advantages!

Hi Baz - I must admit it did make me smile to see the dark humour of Fetch’s algorithm playing its hand that way 😂

Hopefully I’ll provide some form of competition - my training is v much limited by work rota (ironically it prob would have been a better multiplayer week for me this next week!)

Can someone repost the spreadsheet with the number of squares needed to progress from past rounds? I can't find it now and it was really interesting to read last week...

Take a break when you want; there's no need to be proscriptive.

CBA is as good a reason for taking a break as any. It’s meant to be fun. If a few breaks extend the fun them I’m all for it. Wouldn’t want to put a limit on it.
