Well the the actual reason I am single is really because I haven’t been looking. No date for a couple of years. But a few break ups haven’t helped, it’s the that feeling of being “ready” to be with someone, which I don’t always feel at the moment.
Though it seems when smug marrieds ask that question it’s after one of them had spent the evening complaining about their OH. Always a good time for me to mention a great band I’ve seen or a lovely trip away I’ve got lined up 😀

How do you lurk? I’m never sure so Scuze the interruption
“No ones made me a good enough offer and I’m not interested in settling down for the sake of it” would be the polite response I believe.

I've nothing against husbands. I just prefer other people's to one of my own.
It usually stops the interrogation.

I often get asked why I am single, or rather, surprise at my single status is being uttered, followed by how come?
The long answer is, well, long, the quick answer is: because I have had a few long term relationships that didn't work out for various reasons and now I prefer to be on my own. My happiness levels are higher, I don't have to continuously compromise, I can be myself. And keep chickens. I love keeping chickens. It is much better than having a partner... and you get eggs
