You might also want to look at Julian Goater (a 70s/80s UK 10k and CC runner) - 'How to run faster' or something. Despite the California looking cover, it's very much a British old-school train-hard book. My life in the mud kind of thing. Chatty and not technical but with tons of excellent advice.

I like the sound of the Goater book ER - I like books to be motivating but not too technical!

It is a good read. I'm underwhelmed by the marketing copy for it and the cover is just plain naff. Presumably mostly written by his jourrnalist co-author based on interviews, but doesn't suffer for that. That's if you don't mind a potted stroll through memory lane with the likes of Brendan Foster, Dave Bedford, Charlie Spedding, Ovett, Coe and Cram and the rest of the crew. :)

Gosh, I'd forgotten this thread :)
If anyone is interested, we have Boff Whalley talking at one of our free running seminars :) runningdialogues.org His book is excellent, I really enjoyed it. Thoroughly recommended to anyone who wants a bit of tub-thumping talk about running :)

And I liked the Goater book, but bloody hell he doesn't half say 'tall and rangy' a lot! Good as a how-to, but don't buy the kindle version as the programmes aren't in there due to a snafu (they might have fixed it by now though)

Charlie Speddings book "From Last to First" is a good read. For a fictional read you can't beat "Flannagan's Run" by Tom McNab....an exciting tale based on a true event of when there was a race right across America!

of course , if you want a serious academic work then "The Lore of Running" by Tim Noakes is a must for serious runners and coaches even if a little old. Trouble is it costs a lot(!) but at around 1,000 pages it is almost an encyclopedia!

I'll look out for that Charlie Speddings book. Thanks Steve. By all accounts he was a good but not great runner who found a way to really excel and succeed. Should be interesting.
