My internet supplier keeps calling me to tell me I need to press 2 to speak to an operator as they are about to cut off my internet due to criminal activity.

That's "my internet provider" rather than my actual internet provider or the police.

So they can get in the bin with the PayPal and National Crime Agency scams too then.

I had a phone call from my ISP back when I had a landline. I let them waffle on for a bit before asking who they represented, whereupon they said "oh, we deal with a few companies" before reeling off all the usual suspect ISPs.

When I pointed out that it was funny that they had not referred to my provider, they stuttered, stumbled, and the line went suddenly dead. It was a shame, I had enjoyed wasting their time... :)

I'd be tempted to ask them to hold on while I answer the door and leave them for a while but it's always a robot these days.

My housemate enjoys channeling his schoolboy acting career, and responding to human callers asking after him with teary eyes - "I'm sorry, Gavin died this morning". Dark humour it may be, but it does get rid of the calls pretty sharpish.

the longer you keep them talking, the more you protect the more vulnerable - and, I would like to think, run up their phone bill.

Derek rang to tell me that my boiler service contract needed to be be renewed. I replied “we don’t have a boiler”, (we do) to which he responded “how do you heat your water?” “We use geothermal ground source heating” (we don’t) and then he hung up! How rude!

Thing is, having my national insurance number 'suspended' isn't even a thing. it doesn't even make sense!

Talking of scams: In both 2019 and 2020, the amount of money lost to romance fraud outstripped that stolen by online shopping fraud, according to Action Fraud, which is the main reporting body in the UK.
