"In the 16th and 17th centuries, medlars were bawdily called "open-arses" because of the shape of the fruits, inspiring boisterous or humorously indecent puns in many Elizabethan and Jacobean plays."

And that there is such a word as "bletting" which has to happen to medlars before they are edible!

(Wikepedia is wonderful isn't it?)

They get mentioned on GQT a lot - it seems they are sort of a rude in-joke amongst horticulturists, it seems.

Hugh Fearnly-Whittingstall devoted pretty much an entire episode of River Cottage to medlars. There was lots of medlar jam.

Goat hunting occurs in New Zealand. My son and his companions met a group of goat hunters who shared a stew with them whilst they all sheltered for the night in one of the many huts that are around for walkers/trampers etc. Apparently Feral goats can be a bit of a nuisance for farmers.

How to tell the difference between Nz and Aus flags.

Red stars = NZ. Extra white star under Union Jack = Australia

Thanks to helping out with the school parties at the Olympic stadium, I now know what 'dabbing' is and who Radzi is.
