Despite the recent history of the region suggesting otherwise, the term "balkanisation" is not recent, it dates from the 19th century and refers to the fall of the Ottoman Empire rather than the collapse and subsequent division of Yugoslavia.

That young people have a different definition of "recent" than I do.

[Are you suggesting that the mid 1990s isn't recent, or that the early 19th century is?]

I would not consider Balkanisation recent because the 19th version of it was part of my GCO GCE O level syllabus in the early to mid 1980s. I do not consider the 1980s recent or, in other words, it was far too long ago now.

My degree is in Modern European Studies. My first brush with the term "Balkanisation" was as it was happening in the Balkans, around the same time as I was studying for my degree in the mid 1990s, so I kind of conflated the two.

Everything since Cromwell, at the latest, is modern history to me. In literature Shakespeare is considered "early modern".

My metalwork teacher asked me if I'd heard of the modern movement. I said yes, it was a 50s dance craze. (I'll never know whether or not he knew I was joking) |
