You can be satisfied in knowing that you probably took on the Gaer at its hardest. That first one by Bassaleg Rd is possibly the worst climb (we don't actually do that as one on our five on the Firebreaks run - well, we do run down that one, but not up it).

The uphills on TofT aren't really an issue. OK, more uphill than Cardiff - but then everything has more uphill than Cardiff. People seem to think that because it allows you to go 3-5 mins quicker than on the flat, it is easy........but to get your 3-5 mins you have to be working just as hard as on the flat, therefore it hurts just as much as any flat HM. Then add to that the long downhill actually making you use your muscles in a way that you simply don't train for. So it hurts just as much at the time, but then gives you aches from using your muscle in a slightly different way.

So it hurts - but generally people quite like the 3-5 mins bit.

Well, I got the pain and my 3-5 minutes were slower, rather than faster :-(

Personally, having run a few HM's, including TofT, I don't think it is easier at all! Yes, I ran my pb on that course, but I find it debatable if that was because there is a long downhill stretch at the beginning to be honest! It is actually quite hard to run downhill for that length of time and the rest of the course isn't that easy at all... I found it harder than any HM I had run before and felt really quite ill afterwards too, as those there at the time will testify!

I have also run Cardiff, as a pacer, but I reckon I would be faster on the Cardiff course, provided it wasn't too crowded with people getting in my way, i.e. being able to start near the front...

Had the day off today. Went to TK Maxx in Maesglas Newport and got a New Balance vest for £8 (white with orange and black) and a New Balance base T for £13 (black). Not sure if the vest could have been a bit looser, got them both medium. They had some NB shorts as well, although none with a zipped back pocket which is good for taking a work ID card.
