If you look under the title of the thread that you're in, up there ^^^^, you'll see under it, that it shows the number of watchers and the number of lurkers. The lurkers are the number of people reading the thread at the same time as you. Watchers are the number of people who have the thread marked as a favourite so they get a notification every time there's a comment.

I'm assuming you might be talking about the lurkerthon thread - they try to get as many lurkers as possible by posting links in other threads which will take you to the Wednesday lurkerthon thread instead of somewhere interesting!! You have to be wary on a Wednesday ;-)
