Or are they?

Anyone own one that is a) actually waterproof and b) stayed actually waterproof after how many months?

I like them for watching running when it's raining.

Impossible to run in. Far too hot & sweaty. I just wear a thin hat, so it feels like it's not raining on me.

I've never figured out if all the moisture inside a waterproof jacket is leakage or perspiration. Either way, it just leaves me warm and wet instead of cold and wet.

I run in a waterproof gilet these days. It still gets a bit steamy inside but since there are no sleeves ventilation is better.

That said, my runs in foul weather are an hour or so. If I were doing day-long hikes across the Brecon Beacons or Dartmoor I might be more interested in a "proper" waterproof, if it exists.

Montane Ajax, I've had mine for over 2 years and it's amazing. I work as a Bicycle Courier so can be out all day in the wind and rain and it has never failed me.....

As a side note, for trousers I use Berghaus Paclite Pants, again utterly bombproof and Trekmates Matterhorn GTX mittens (but they're only for the depths of winter)

Interesting. Because most of that moisture inside you mentioned does come at the end of the sleeves.

For that, I'd personally recommend an inov-8 stormshell. I've probably recommended it on some of the other threads highlighted as linked below/right

My Ron Hill did me proud on Sunday (9.5 hours in all kinds of rain, except the sort that stops). It's new though, so no comment on longevity.

Another gripe about waterproof jackets (and the gilet incidentally) is that the water runs off them ... onto my shorts so they get soaked as well. I did have a pair of waterproof leggings once, but the water just ran off them ... into my shoes. I can't win.
