I take Spatone every morning as am frequently low on iron - take my thyroid meds at night so they don't interfere (also means that having coffee first thing isn't an issue). I can't remember why but I think soy isn't supposed to be great for those with thyroid issues? Clive's pies do some lovely gf/veggie/vegan (or combinations of these) pies. |

I keep seeing mention of Spatone and all I can find online about it is sales pitches. Even from that it's got my bullshit detectors twitching. Has anyone got anything that shows it is more effective than other iron supplements. From what I can see it's just an expensive way to sell stuff by using the word "natural" a lot.

Nellers, here's a study that found that Spatone with Apple has better bioavailability than tablets. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov It's a lot more palatable than tablets. LMH, I take my thyroid meds if I wake up in the middle of the night. I think that the issue with soya is that some say that it interferes with the absorption of the tablets. I don't think there's any medical advice to avoid soya generally though, it doesn't harm the thyroid. |

Spatone is much easier on the gut than say ferrous sulphate, I just can't tolerate that even at a low dose so the Spatone is worth it for me. I have the one with apple juice but you can just buy the plain and take it with any fruit juice to aid absorption. If you don't have any difficulty with iron levels or standard tablets then it's just a question of personal taste and cost I guess. I think the absorption was what I was thinking of becca. Why don't you just take your thyroid meds when you go to bed? |

Bedtime is a bit too close to dinner time for me and so I wouldn't be taking the meds on an empty stomach.

Ah - it's abit of a pain isn't it? But better than the alternative.

Think I might struggle with vegan - last night's street food was cheese toastie, followed by haloumi burger. Also a latte or flat white with soya milk didn't taste (or feel) quite right. Might take some adjusting. Maybe I just won't drink milk or buy cheese, but will still have them if eating / drinking out? G

I like unsweetened almond milk (I really do not like the taste of cows milk, never have done, but successive family members/partners look at me like I'm being crazy and awkward - I seem to recall that the Japanese think that Europeans smell funny on account of all the dairy we consume), and in restaurants I'm finding it more common to see a dairy substitute - on the account of allergies, and the almond milk tastes just fine in chai tea (my goto drink). Often consider going vegan, cheese and eggs would be my achilles heels. Also I do have issues with - why would I have to give up honey, which if bought locally really doesn't cause that much problem to the animals involved. And then there's wool, and what about keeping pets (I knew vegans who thought pets were also verboten...) Vegan always seemed to me an all or nothing proposition, which could always catch you out, whereas vegetarianism was at least a carefully balanced hypocrisy. But 28 years veggie now and 11 years running, 8 of those averaging 2000 miles a year, I think it's more important to develop a strategy/diet that works long term rather go all out for a year or two (or ten!!) and then lapse (as some ex-vegans I know did).

I'm interested in animal welfare, but I'm not religious about any of these things. I try to do things that don't harm, and where possible actually help, in a number of areas. But if I transgress occasionally, I'm not going to beat myself up. Just a different way of looking at it. For the last 12 months I've mostly not eaten meat or fish. But I have probably done so half a dozen times (at a restaurant, or a friend's house or by accident) and that's fine to me. 3 meals per day x 365 days = 1000. 6 transgressions = 0.6% So I'm 99.4% a better person to animals. That'll do. G
