My question is around protein and especially how to up my intake without relying on processed food in the form of powder shakes. I also don't want to eat lots of cheese or nuts so am looking to increase beans and other non-dairy protein such as tofu, tempeh and maybe seitan if I can find some. My "target" amount right now would be a minimum of 85g. I very, very rarely manage this. I suppose I'm sort of thinking aloud here and just looking for ideas for what to do with plant protein sources which go beyond my standard stir-fry or miso broth. And to some extent recognising that I won't always be able to hit my target as sometimes I'll be having a family meal which is more carbohydrate-focused (e.g. pasta & tomato sauce). Am I missing anything obvious? Has anyone here upped their plant protein in an unprocessed, easy and interesting way? |

If you’re happy with seeds, Sallykate, tahini is a good source. Quinoa and teff are grains which contain protein. I make injera from teff flour. If I can’t get the flour, I whizz up teff grains in my grinder or food processor. |

If I need a quick protein burst after leaving the gym and heading to work, I dip banana in tahini. I also make a delicious drink with tahini, cinnamon, some sort of milk and a banana. Whizz it up and slurp. I make my own hummus with tahini and serve it with rice bowls. My favourite is brown basmati topped with pak choi braised in olive oil, soya sauce and water; some chopped cherry tomatoes and cucumber and a splodge of hummus on top. If I’m in a hurry I just make a quick tarator - tahini, water, lemon juice, garlic, salt and put that on top. |

Seitan’s easy enough to make…but is time consuming. You just need to get hold of vital wheat gluten.

I get most of my protein from pulses. I like dahl... Easy to digest and full of goodness and very versatile.

Beans/pulses combined with rice results in a complete protein (ie all the amino acids). Soy is a complete protein on its own, if I recall correctly.

I'm watching with interest. Beans and pulses give me very bad wind. Is there a trick?

Soak them. I find red lentils are the easiest to digest. Also cooking them with prebiotics like garlic, inion, leeks really helps. |
