Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Well done RWR at Forfar. Nice to see you. That 50m thigh deep puddle was a "laugh"! :-)G

Interesting on the back to backs. I do shorter on Sat and longer on Sun, but only because club run is on Sunday and I sometimes tack my miles onto theirs to make the long run up. And sometimes Sat is a race, so again, better to get the quicker shorter thing out of the way, then long, slow (very slow sometimes!) plod on the Sunday. But that's all just convenience, nothing to do with physical benefit. No idea which would be better.

Does anyone do a longer run during the week, like 12 - 16 on a Wednesday or something? In mara plans, that usually features, but is it just the weekend long and/or back to backs that matter for ultras? :-)G

Unless it's a midweek marathon. I rarely hit 10 miles during the week.

I was going to suggest a decent run in the week for folk who have chance to get out. Maybe replace a back to back weekender with a mid-weeker. It breaks up the trudge of Sat and Sun runs every week ;-) Great in winter too if you can get free time at short notice to coincide with good weather windows :-)

In mara training I usually do a 10 or 11 on a Wednesday night, in between club sessions on Tue/Thur (usually amounts to about 6/7ish miles) and I find the mid-week mid-distance run to be invaluable, but in ultra training I just pile on the miles every day at lunchtime - the most I can fit in is 8.5.

Also, I've only ever target-trained for a marathon in the Autumn, which means long light evenings to get midweek long sessions done in. I don't fancy 10 miles in the dark and rain on the same back-roads routes at the moment and I need my lunchtime sessions just so that I see some sunlight during the week!

I do a long hilly trail run on Saturday, usually between 30-50k (30-40 more likely) and then perhaps a flattish 10 mile trail run on Sunday. I try to do a 10-miler mid-week if time allows but its usually around 8-miles at something like 'tempo' pace. Perhaps once a month I'll try to log a longer double at the weekend, like 35k/30k all on hilly trails. 90% of my mileage is on trails. I find roads take longer to recover from.

I was advised to do as much of my mileage offroad too Bogman, less stress on the old joints. RWR, I prefer autumn maras and summer training for that reason too. I don't enjoy road running in the dark much. Head torch runs off road are great, but take longer, more organisation and are easily bailed/skipped due to circumstances. However, our club often do a head torch run on a Wed, and it can be 7-10 miles. Add on 2-3 before hand just around the roads/trails and that can make up quite a nice mid week mid length run.

I think I need to re-introduce the commute run. Really no excuse not to and it's a great way of fitting in some extra miles. It's light by 7:30 in morn now but still dark going home at 5:30 or 6 unfortunately. Might just have to get on with it though! :-)G

Lisrun & I take a hilly/muddy head torch run on a Wednesday for my club but its morphed into a beginners/ slower group. I'm happy to do this as it gives them another outlet and they all seem to love it which makes me happy :-). I used to do my own off road run first but I've got involved in a 5 a side footy game first now.
So i go from fast and furious to slow and steady 4-5 in the mud. Now if i did the usual 5 first my monthly mileage would look 20-25 miles better but i wonder if its better for me?. I look upon the footy as an interval /speed session but again its this hang up on mileage i think we all have a problem dealing with as its so ingrained in us.

postscript: I filled in for someone last week and played footy Wednesday , Thursday and Friday eves. Come Saturday my legs were very quick to tell me I'm way to bloody old to do that now !

footie is great training but I always seem to pick up injuries....probably a combination of the intensity of it + age ! Saying that, given the choice between intervals and footie I know I'd choose a footie every time, but i probably wouldn't run for the following two days !
