HoD, I'm doing something called the Oxon 40 in May. Admittedly it's too late for your ultra, but I'm doing my first one in August, so I'm using the Oxon as a test event. Here's the website so you can see the sort of thing. thamesvalleyldwa.org.uk |

That's a good pint GeeeM - I find it hard not to "race" road marathons, but I have no trouble running trail marathons reeeeeeally slowly! Might see if I can find something for mid April ![]() |

The Bath Beat (26.5) / Pewsey Downsaround (various options up to 35 miles) on 25/26 April look good and are cheap as chips. Easter weekend, (19th) you have the excellent Compton 20/40 near Reading

Yes I just found the Bath Beat but saw it's full, there is a waiting list, but it's the week before the ultra so might be a bit too close! Might have a go at the Cribyn fell race that weekend too - not long distance wise, but definately not going be a quick race, there's a very good chance I'll come last! ![]() |

£60-00 for an off road marathon , sod that. For what its worth , i think we get to hung up on miles and although the fell is 'only' 5 or so miles the effort to do it and time will be worth double or more and treble the fun

There should be a going rate of £1/mile. If White Star Running can organise a bloody good (if somewhat hilly) marathon for very nearly £26 last year (it's gone up this year, but not by much), it shouldn't be difficult for others. Even Stour Valley Path 100km is only £60. I guess once the rate climbs greatly over £1/mile you start questioning how much to do with the actual event, and for that matter running, the money is.

Hardmoors 30/55/60/110 can be entered for £140 before December. Bit more to include the 160 instead of the 110 but still decent price i think. (and yes i know i'm very biased ! ) |
