With 3 weeks there is no time to think about anything but speed.
Leave anything he does alone in regards general running but
Sessions
Week 1
4 x 400 maximal off 5 mins recovery 3 x 600 at 1500 effort off 6 mins recovery
Week 2 3 x 500 maximal off 5 mins recovery 3 x 700 at 1500 effort off 6 mins
Week 3 8 x 200 maximal off 2 mins recovery (Actual speed not important) 1 x 1000 at 1500 pace 1 x 500 at 1500 pace Off 5 mibs
Go in feeling fast

Morning.
Good sessions Gobi.
Angus - What's your son's training background, what does he currently do? How old is he?

Morning All.
SPR, PoD, Huge thanks for your ideas. I love this place!
He's nearly 13. His training background is sporadic multi-sport, mostly reactive (like now, for instance) rather than proactive. He started playing rugby after Christmas which had him training once or twice a week and either a game or extra training on Sunday. He swims once a week most weeks and rides his bike socially on a Wednesday.
Which means there’s definitely room for some focus and better structure. He currently gets by on natural talent and we’ve all been happy for him to do what he wants. But he says he now wants to be better at running, hence my questions.
I’m trying to balance not being pushy with encouraging him to be the best he can at the things he likes. It’s not always easy.
Thanks again for your help.

Haha Gobi, I not sure I'd want to. Sounds like one those that feels like a good idea at the time but you regret the next day.
Maximals are always the hardest sessions.
Few years ago I did 2 x 800, think I was supposed to have 5 mins, took 3:30 as felt recovered, I wasn't, lol.
Sounds good Angus, just make sure he doesn't decide to do a maximal session every day for the next three weeks, lol.
