Sorry to mention the “Ru****g” word in here but my shoes retired themselves this morning after slightly over 800 miles. Now the choice is do I get shoes that will last 800 miles again (which is about 3 years running for me) or do I get a pair that will see me into the bath chair on or soon after my next “big” birthday in 2023? |

Fizz :-)
The answer is always “both” when it comes to new kit.

anything related to running is an essential expense as it's an investment in health and fitness which is always beneficial in older age

macca - I'm fortunate to be able to buy shoes 'when cheap', as opposed to when needed. I bought 4 pairs on Sunday, to join a pair of Mudclaws and a pair of Hoka's under the bed, for 'when needed'. I hope shoes don't have a best before date. And I hope I stay fit and active long enough to use them ... |

I wonder if shoes genuinely do have a a BB date? I very rarely buy road shoes and have had a pair of Wave Inspire 14s tucked away for over three years (closer to four really) , I started using them recently and they feel very stiff and unwieldy, I am wondering if the midsole has lost its oomph.

I know at one point they did say that yes they do but I know Velociraptor is a prime example of someone who buys shoes in multiples before they change style. Maybe she can confirm

Certainly the old (1980s) foam midsoles used to harden and become brittle over time. Whether that's still true I know not - technologies and materials have evolved - but I believe if you left a pair of mid-1980s running shoes alone for a couple of years they'd be absolutely useless. I have personal experience of this. I remember little except they were from Nike and blue.

Original blue F-lite 230s ![]() ![]() I have had one pair of trainers suffer storage related deterioration. The glue attaching the little bits of rubber to the sole lost its stickiness over a period of more than 10 years and the little bits of rubber are peeling off with use. Never noticed midsole material losing its bounce. |
