Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

That's terrible that they just redirect their investment into another polluting and damaging product. We need to find ways to penalise that sort of activity. Simplest would just be to tax the companies producing polluting products, make new plastic, oil, gas etc. hugely expensive to sell so unattractive?

And on registered companies, again, another nuance is that they could be a 10 year plus company, but only get into a specific technology (solar PV, ground source heating etc.) on an opportunistic basis and when subsidies go, they pull out.

They've gotta do something with all that oil, HappyG!

Still seems to be major assumption about how quickly we will change commercial steel production, but on the whole it looks like a bad idea. It probably is just about jobs.

I'm suspicious the government might change its mind and pull the plug on it.

Fossil free steel... it seems the Swedes are leading on this. Converting their steel production from a furnance to an electric arc and powered by renewable energy (doesn't say whether that is nuclear, solar, wind). SSAB will have their US operations providing fossil free steel by 2026: ssab.com

For more details about the system see the PDFs here: hybritdevelopment.com

Moments like this in quite proud of who I work for....

2050 still seems a long way off, but the 3 year start date is fairly agressive to make changes in financial services/pension funds and all that. :-)

Hydrogen is getting more noise and it is seen as the potential answer for hard to abate carbon intensive sectors like aircraft, shipping and steel. Technology wise it’s a number of years behind solar and wind. The theory is there (On production) as is the practice but scaling up and getting the economics for it to work, and innovation creating the demand is the tough nut.

Excellent summary of where we are from woodMac here.

Re earlier chat about plastics. I agree with everyone in the end result but I think that the solution is better driven through regulation. Some plastics are important / essential (my sons insulin delivery system for starters) but others (supermarket and retail packaging) are not. Government has the power to regulate out plastics - paying 10p for a Tesco’s bag is not a disincentive but a small annoyance to most. Putting up tax to make it 15p won’t have the desired effect.

Agree we need more robust legislation to effectively "outlaw" plastics for anything other than medicine or safety.

I assume you mean single-use plastics, :) G - otherwise what on earth are we going to wear on our feet to run?

About This Thread

Maintained by HappyG(rrr)
Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
