I saw this the other day and was wondering if it was legal. Making assumptions, but I am presuming it is SORN'd, although it is parked on a public road. If it isn't SORN'd, someone who may be checking the road tax wouldn't be able to see anyway, unless they can lift up the front of the over? It does not impact me personally one way or another, but I was just wondering.

If it's on a SORN then it's illegal but it might just be covered for protection rather than camouflage. That'd be my assumption. I wouldn't want to risk the fine.

I had to google what that is, and here are the regulations. https://www.gov.uk/sorn-statutory-off-road-notification. What are the advantages of covering a van anyway? If it were a car I thought it was a big no-no because any flapping around will rub the paintwork and give it a bit of a scouring in the long term, at least, so it is said.

If an official was checking vehicles in the area, what would happen if the number plate couldn't be checked I wonder? It looks like the front of the cover could be pulled up to check the number plate, but if a car parks close, access to the plate may be tricky I suppose.

I had that rubbed/scoured paintwork with an old Landrover once. Never covering a car again (unless with a garage/car port.

We cover our van during the winter (or will do once I get a dry weekend before winter is over!!?)

A tidy cover should not scratch bodywork as is fleece? / soft lined.
It keeps a lot of weather off and helps keep the van dry so reducing dampness working it's way in. The covers breath so prevent condensation.
Our van rapidly turns into a moss monster when parked in the yard - due to being in a sheltered position.
Not something we take on and off often - so yes, we SORN the van during the winter - not paying tax to have it parkedcuo going nowhere.
We are fortunate the public highway issue does not affect us. I am no expert, although I think if a vehicle is SORNED then it can be stored on a public highway, just not used?

No, if on the road it must be taxed, whether or not being used.

I plan to keep using my van during the winter, so won't be SORN or covered.

I'm also using my van over the winter. It's too nice to leave unused.

We are itching to travel to the snow in the Cairngorms - it’s my favourite time of the year for campervanning.
