Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I made twice the recipe, 4 cookies, for 2 people. I used chopped up 85% chocolate, not chips.

Question: are these cookies good enough to forget that this is a Nigella recipe?

Any recommendations for general bread making books (hand not machine)?

I make bread all the time and have done for years but I don’t follow any particular recipe etc i just make it up, have developed a feeling for what and how to do things - they don’t always work by any means but it’s how i go about it.

Anyway, my daughter’s boyfriend loves having fresh bread here, and over the last few months has actually attempted to make a few loaves himself at home with great results. When he was here the other day they commented that he needs a ‘proper bread knife though!’ As trying to cut with chopping knife wasn’t good. I joked that i’d get him one for his birthday (in a couple of weeks) and he thought that was actually a great idea, and a bread recipe book as well - so that he can try something beyond a bog standard white tin loaf.

So any favourites? Regular yeasted breads for the most part as i don’t think they’ll realistically go into sourdough starters etc Variety of styles.

Dan Lepard Handmade Loaf? The River Cottage handbook? I have a couple of Linda Collister's books which were OK when I was getting interested. Andrew Whitley's Bread Matters is good, but aims to get you making sourdough eventually, and is maybe a bit political.

Brilliant Bread by James Morton has a good mix of recipes, and the ones I've tried so far have been great, the intro and general text alongside is quite lighthearted too. It's a good one for beginners and also gives you room to progress as you get more skilled :)

No idea where she got the idea (or recipe) for this, but Mini Nico has made Confit Garlic Focaccia
