Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Sorry to bring the Copenhagen back into discussion Bowman(!), but Nick Bester did a video of the race, where he was running with Anya Culling, who he coaches. I saw somewhere that the commentators said she had a personal pacer, so presumably it was him. He had a bit of a nightmare getting to the race though, but just about managed it with a very late change of flight and airport.

Seems EA had the race as some kind of development race as both her and Philippa Bowden were in an England vest.

Can I commend and recommend Canute's excellent blog on training and recovery and its relationship to long term heart and other physiological health or damage?

And great to see a marathon in plan for you Bowman. Many will be targetting about the same date (me included, though 1/4 hour or more behind you!) so keep telling us how you are feeling and race targets and approach! :-) G

Good plan, Bowman. Maybe racing another one without a time target helps with getting used to the race setting. Also, maybe you could do a few shorter races until then. I remember that the 10k you did was chaos. If you do another one without pressure and then have a good experience, it helps with the mental game.
I had a couple of races in the build up, some good, some not so much. All valuable in terms of getting used to the race setting and different conditions.

I've got a date pencilled in, 8 October. I haven't signed up yet. I'll make up my mind in summer if I want to commit to marathon training in the heat.

Oscar the Grouch, Fighting my way back :)
Cheers HappyG(rrr) Yes lets see how the weather might be first, 🀣
There might be some type of reasonable target tipsku :)
Yes i have had some issues lately with my races :) And i'm not kidding myself, maybe i am the problem and not the strange "race problems".
I need to learn to suck it up, and have contingency plans.
But yes a few other races might be good.
I might do a short one this weekend. But easy, and not an all out thing.

I always do two or three 10ks and HMs through the 18 week marathon training plan, partly as tests and partly for race practice. Gives me a good indication as to how my training is going.

What's your actual racing history Bowman? Are all of the races you've done on Fetch (as there aren't many?) I did remind myself of your blog ref the 38:56 10k you ran in April, which itself had mitigating factors in terms of how well you did on the day, but as someone who ran a similar sort of time in the run up to my first marathon I was surprised that you expected to go from narrowly sub 39 to sub 3 on marathon race day. I know from my personal stats that the various calculators say that low 38 should correlate with a sub 3 marathon etc, but I equally feel like I know (for me at least) that a sub 3 is a long way off even if I did run a 38:30 in marathon build up. That could just be my sandbagging though!

larkim, pretty much. In short. all my training is here besides a year that got lost in a app called endomondo i think. But the rest i managed to upload here.
My real training really begun 2,5 years ago, when i had plateaued, and it was, ok what now, well a run streak maybe? So its like this:

2023 is the faint grey line.

Before that i have had a few 10k around 50 min, a few HM around 2h over the years. So no real racing experience at all really.
I really wasn't a racing guy, i'm not yet either, but i'm getting there, wanting to have "official times" but still i don't fancy the race "atmosphere" and so on that some people do.

But yes you are right about the times, but i don't usually get my best times on the races.
And i'm slower on shorter distances. So i don't think the 10k will tell me as much as a HM or even longer, how i might perform on a marathon.

Some people are very fast on the short stuff (i have a colleague who is a ~32 min 10k er, but did marathon in 3:30)

But yes, i have no idea of what i was thinking really..

Look at my last MP session two weeks from my CPH try.
https://www.fetcheveryone.com/t-21786110,

I think that one gave me good indications of being close to a 3h marathon, but maybe a bit over confident.
