Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

It takes perseverance and learning to get to your best times. Some manage it faster than others.

It took me 13 years and 24 marathons to go sub three. Arguably though I should have managed it beforehand if I had trained and raced better.

It was actually 11 years between sub 3:15 (was 3:08) and sub 3

Benchmarks for me would be 38:30 and 1:23 low and with those times behind me then sub three is possible.

It’s great to have some new people here to watch progress and also to celebrate achievements when they come along.

Poking my head in here to say that MP session was really impressive and definitely indicative of fitness Bowman 🇸🇪 but possibly a bit close to the race itself? I had a look at some of the higher mileage Pfitz plans (he's my guru) and even on the very highest mileage plan he doesn't have strenuous MP sessions less than a month out from the race. I wonder if that was a factor, it's a lot of quality and two weeks is pretty close to the race.

Yes maybe, but I never really thought that 2 whole weeks of easy training after that wouldn’t be enough.
I wasn’t especially sore after that session, I felt very strong and rested on the race day, but it might be too close for sure.

In this case though, I went out way to hard in the heat, simple as that. I don’t think anything else really wasn’t perfect. Sleep, food, rest, it all went really well.
I was in the red from start, and kept going, having no experience from “sudden” heat :)
Of course I might not have got a sub3 if it was more training like conditions, but it would have been a better race that I had finished to.
I’ll look over a proper plan to see if I can get some ideas.

I’ll see if I can get in a proper try on a HM this summer, I only have hm times as the first half of a marathon, or during som other training. But I should be able to squeeze in a time a bit under 1:30.
10k I have gps times around 38:30.
But I’ll have to shave those times down a bit more I think to be more comfortable.
It’s great to be the one of the new kids :), You all have so much knowledge to share, it helps!

Bowman 🇸🇪 Sounds to me like it was heat pure & simple.
I ran 3:02:19 off 1:28:41 HM after being injured over Xmas/New Year.

I trained for 12 weeks running a sub 4 training marathon & another in 6 hours+ - both off-road. Also did a lot of racing in the build-up, nothing amazing though. On the day I was hoping to PB (beat 3:09) with a stretch goal of 3:05. I set off, felt good & for once my body held out til the end. I ran a 2-3 minute positive split which gave me the belief I needed to aim for sub-3. Unfortunately never made it & I think age + Covid have scuppered any chances I had.

I’m sure you will if it is your sole running focus - I always enjoyed racing too much. Check out my Po10 which will show just how much 😆

Forrest Jooligan that is an impressive collection of races! Yes it surely was heat that I wasn’t prepared for.
I haven’t thought about it that way, but I guess it is my sole focus, and now even more. :) I think I gravitate toward the marathon because it suits me more than shorter stuff and speed.

Took me abot 80 marathons over 7-8 years , but in reality I started a block of running end of Nov 14 with a 3:42 marathon (123M),
Dec 14 I ran 6 Mara and dropped my time down to 3:23 (227M),
Jan 15 5 Mara best time 3:18 (304M),
Feb 15 1 Mara , 1 6hr Ultra Mara split in ultra was just over 3:15 and added another 20M on top :-) (319M)
Mar 15 4 Mara best 2:57 and also a 1:27 Half PB (301M),
Apr 15 8 Mara best 2:56 slowest 3:27 (357M).

.
Probably going see that in many train schedules ;-)

Certainly unconventional 😆
Are those numbers in brackets total mileage for the training block Joe Hawk? Over what time period if so?

Hard to fit 8 marathons in a month! Bound to result in pretty high mileage too
