LOL, you're right Gobi - I just associate bouncing over small hurdles with the sort of explosivity that running fast requires. Different, but similar in my head.

I'll post P&D's chapter on why they do strides later.

I presume P&D actually prescribe them during runs rather than it being ambiguous?

It's not at all ambiguous in P&D. It'll say something like: 5 miles with 6*100m strides. Daniels also suggests that strides should be incorporated in to general runs.

I know I'm not perfect, I'm not even Gobi, but in my marathon more recent marathon campaigns I've dropped all speedwork such that my faster running has consisted of MP, tempo + strides. I always thought I had the base speed for a sub 3 and so didn't focus on that. To get faster I think I'd have to improve overall speed so would have to change focus I expect.

Honestly I don't really think speed comes into it for marathons. I bet most of you could spank me over 100m. I'm around the speed of the quick women in the club intervals sessions. I think I've actually got slower at short distances though my 5k is slightly improved.

As promised, here is P&Ds take on strides. For anally retentive purposes, I interpreted "often towards the end of a general aerobic or recovery run" as being "straight after so I could log them separately and consistently for reference" but I've interpreted "accelerate up to top speed" as being working up to sprinting.

Apparently they "train your nervous system to allow you to maintain a faster rate of leg turnover during races". Their words, not mine!

Fwiw I maintain a fast rate of leg turnover throughout my steady runs.

Correlation / causation of course, but since following P&D plans which include these components, I do intervals faster and run 5ks faster. Impossible to know how much is attributable to volume or any individual component of P&D plans (I suppose I could drop the strides and the shorter intervals and see what happens) but as it isn't broken I don't plan on fixing it!

Ditto to jda with fast leg turnover. Actually, it was my short legs and rapid cadence that made me think I couldn't go much faster over distances like 5k. I was clearly wrong!

JD - I'm not usually absolute but you are wrong - ask a pro if they still do speedwork

In my best 100km year I also ran a 2.12 800 metres

I didn't say that I didn't do speedwork. I did say that it doesn't matter being slow, and I very much doubt that anyone here is limited in their marathon through not being able to run short distances quickly.
