Even our house sparrows have gone a bit quiet recently.
I was in Danby on the North Yorks Moors this weekend and heard stone chat and meadow pipit. I hopefully have a photo of a stonechat.
Also Mr S disturbed and called me over in time to see an adder disappear into the undergrowth. Amazing to see.

Driving home from a walk in the NF today, a red kite was quite close ahead, gliding down behind some trees.
Next thing, it was a few feet (or maybe a bit more) in front of the windscreen. I'm not sure who was more surprised. I slammed on the brakes. The kite rapidly aborted it's landing.
5 foot of wingspan flapping furiously a few feet in front of you is pretty big. And scary.
We both escaped with a slightly raised heart beat. No contact, but quite close.

Lucky you and the red kite um!
I was really pleased to be able to ID this stonechat from its alarm call first and then find it in the distance on my camera.
And I'm pretty sure this is a meadow pipit. I had seen a small brown jobby around, but was actually focused on a stonechat on the same bush.
Please put me right if I'm wrong. But it was on moorland and Merlin Bird ID picked up both stonechat and meadow pipit and the calls I heard would seem to match.
We saw an adder in the same location.

Mipitt looks good to me. Stonechat are really noisy and very often give themselves away before you see them

Mipit are very common on moorland in spring and summer. A few hard cases over winter, but most migrate to lower ground, often by the coast

A loose 'flock' of 15-20 very confiding wheater by the PW today. I assume they are this year's youngsters as they had absolutely no fear and I got amazing close up views. Beautiful birds

Two "screaming" Swift's this morning. Last year I didn't see any at all but now I've seen some on four occasions in the last ten days.
Good number of Wheatears Kinky, I've never seen that many together.

Our swifts are having a lot of fun this morning. Screaming bunch of about ten low flying over the gardens and between houses.
