"Since 2010, there has been an average of 25 Black Kites recorded in the UK annually, most in the spring and very few in the late summer. Kent is arguably the best county to try and see one, but they do occasionally reach Scotland, such as the bird on mainland Shetland in April 2015." Report on Scarce Migrant Birds in Britain, for 2015 So Black Kites in the UK are pretty random events. The best source of whether anyone else has picked one up in Wales recently is probably Rare Bird Alerts but you have to subscribe to get full viewing. Other than that local bird sightings groups on the likes of twitter and Facebook are probably the best sources. |

New one for me last night. Iberian Azure Winged Magpie birdinginportugal.com I have to say they weren't a bird i'd heard of until i looked them up. A whole family group descended on us. Very much behaving like our magpies. |

Great to watch four Swift's "screaming" around possible nesting sights this morning. Third time I've seen them here recently. And of course they'll be leaving us soon.

Mixed blessings Steve: the swifts will be leaving but it’ll soon be time for looking out for pinkies, winter thrushes and of course waxwing

There was a black kite regularly at red kite feeding stations in Wales about 10 years ago; and an escaped captive one in May this year! More proper records here, but you need to be a member to see the 2 most recent years. They do seem to show up now and again. |

Just gone through Birdguides sightings (you can see at a top level without a subscription) back through 9th July and the only Black Kite reported in the UK in that period was in Cambridgeshire yesterday.

Black kites are another one of those curious species like black redstarts, which are everywhere as soon as you cross the Channel but almost completely absent here for no obvious reason.
