Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

We have a new lot of sparrow fledglings who have been descending on the garden this weekend, I seem to have been constantly refilling the feeders!

That looks like trichomonosis to me, Footpad. I suggest you sterilise your feeders.

Spotted a lazy skylark today, singing loudly while perched on a fence. Girls aren't going to be impressed by that, mate!

So looked into trichomonosis a bit more.. definitely showed the symptoms. Such a shame .. only just got Goldfinches attracted to the feeder. Will give it and the other 2 a good scrub and disinfect. Then a break on feeding them for a week. There's plenty of grub for them at the moment.....

Maybe it's the success he's had with the girls so far that has left him needing to sit on a fence 😉🤣

I don't post here often (ever?) but yesterday I saw something I've not seen before.

Cockchafer everywhere on my run last evening. I've often watched the gulls feast on them on the wing but last night among the flock of gulls was a pair of Hobby twisting and turning and taking their own meals. Seems quite a small snack for a hawk but I suppose there's not that much to a dragonfly either!

Windsor Wool, surprisingly late in the year for cockchafers ('maybugs'). I have to say I find them pretty disgusting, although I should try to be more Chris Packham about them. One evening a couple of years ago, we had them hatching out of our lawn and flying around. One of our cats kept leaping in the air, clapping his paws together and proceeding to eat the downed cockchafer, making a hideous crunching sound in the process. Uggh!

I'm with you J2R, very late for a May bug. I actually had to google to make sure that I hadn't gone mad but my quick research did say they can last 5-6 weeks while they find a partner. A lot of 'spent' males on the ground too, clearly had had a great evening!
