Well that was a whole lot more exciting than I wanted....

11:47 for me. Gutted. Excellent swim at 1:07 and flying on the bike, then noticed my bars coming loose, speed concept. It was the whole thing - the 3 bolts underneath were coming loose. 1 dropped off and the other two were working free so the whole shebang was wobbling about, very unstable and likely to fall off catastrophically at some point.

I tried to nurse it but it was getting worse and I pulled over in the feed station go DNF. Then noticed the mini bungee cords I use to secure bottles in their cages, and wrapped these around the stem very tightly, including over the bolts. Tried it and amazingly it provided some stability and stopped the remaining 2 bolts working further free. 16 minutes stationary.

Did the remaining 35 miles with extreme caution but nursed it to the end. I would have just DNF’d but have a legacy Kona slot and this was the IM I had to do to remain on the list. I was on for a 5:50-6:00 bike, ended 6:37.

Ran ok, 4:00:03, just mighty relieved to finish really. Spectacular race as always.

These humble bungee cords saved my Kona 2020 place. I shall include them with the memorabilia frame after....

At the risk of sounding like everyone’s mum...

Really pleased you validated your Kona slot. Really appalled at what could have happened when a DNF was the sane call.

Indeed Greppers.

I'm going to borrow some bunting from the 700 thread -- for *not* DNFing, for ingenuity, and for determination! buntingbunting

O_o TRO... Well done for finishing like, but yeah... That isn't at all terrifying.

I have failed to run here in Barcelona, but I did swim in the sea and walk 10k or more each day, so I feel I've earned my Spain badge even though my suunto was uncooperatively low on battery so I couldn't really track anything.

Back to Belgium, now.

TRO. That really is quite unbelievable. I’m not sure what to even say!!!!

Just after some advice really. I have always had time and a reasonable amount of money to throw at sport. Now I have neither 😂

I don’t really have any aims or goals just now other than to improve fitness and ‘get faster’ at bike/run. Still have about half stone to lose as well. My training twice a day life is clearly gone with a 6 month old, and when I can get out is restrictive although it can be every day.

Currently no gym membership or any ‘equipment’ at home other than trainers and bike. Soon, it will be dark of course at the only time I can ride/run, which makes cycling more tricky (although I’ve always ridden in the dark, it’s just not ideal)

What would you do for most bang for buck- time and money. Can’t really afford a coach or expensive gym as I’m not working, I’ve picked the stay at home mum life over money. My flakey foot doesn’t always let me run, some months are on and some are off. Ideally, in winter running is preferable as it’s so time efficient but not sure I will get much out the foot this year.

So..... what would you do?
Just run and ride where possible and do no ‘hard’ cycling as it’s dark? (Not that I’m doing anything hard in the light as I dunno WTF to do and need motivation)

Join a cheap £30 month no frills gym that has spin bikes but no watt bikes?

Get a turbo and some sort of ‘thing’ like trainerroad or zwift type thing with sessions (I am the least technical person ever though and god knows how I would even set up a turbo never mind the technical equipment)

Try and get some online training plan

I end up all a bit lost when I have no structure and want something for ‘me’ that isn’t just being a mum, which sport gives me

GF - just fit in what you can, when you can. I tried to keep a sense of normal and structure (suits me better as well) but it was just impossible for the first 2 years (4 actually but thats because I had 2 kids!)

I'm just starting to get back to regular training now the youngest is 2.

I had to rethink my training plan on a fortnightly basis and I've had to try really hard to remember that something is better than nothing and if I can't train for 4 or 5 days on the trot then its not the end of the world and I haven't lost steam etc..

I know what it's like wanting to get back to your old self but I think it's best to just keep ticking over to start with until you find your feet I'm starting to get used to no structure.

Sylvie has just turned 4 and can ride a bike. I did a parkrun with her at the weekend. She rode and I ran pushing the littley in the buggy in 38 minutes. It was actually a decent workout
