Kieren
Ah, that kind of makes sense I guess. They do feel good. I think I might even see if I can find a Nike road shoe with that profile as I liked my little jaunt up and down Sweatshop so much

The next question now is what length spikes? They cam with 6mm (I think) and I bought a set of 12mm spikes.

Any tips on matching conditions with spikes or is that something you just have to learn for yourself through trial and error?

Good start for the season to me. I ran 5.26 miles (they are never accurate are they ;-) ) in 42.02. The same course took me just under 52 mins last year. My ave pace in pretty much all XC last year was just above 10 min miles and, today, was 8 min miles - although it varied from 5:47 - 9:32. I am happy with that and hope to improve as the season goes on.

One problem I have is with my asthma. Today, there was no respite in undulation and variation in terrain so I could not settle into a breathing rythmn like I do on the road. My breathing felt like the walls of my lungs were bouncing off each other in a very random fashion and my nails were a bit on the bluey purple side at ons stage. I am not really sure what I can do about that. Not a lot really. Still had fun though :-)

Thanks Mats. It was a lot of fun. I am doing an extra race next week. A 3 x 2.5 mile relay at Reigate Priory Park. I am really looking forward to that - nice and short so I can really go all out and see what I cam capable of. XC every week bar one in November :-)
Is anyone else doing the Pirie 10 on December 1st?

Thanks BS. was 1st XC for 3 yrs as been avoiding them since messed up ankle in 2005, but this week and next week are 7-8 miles from home so wanted to support them. Enjoy next week. Haven't done XC relays since did Manc Uni ones in mid 90's

Well, I managed to get to Lloyd Park and make my XC debut. Literally bought my spikes (NB RX230) only a few hours beforehand on a rush visit to Run & Become and we got to the race mere minutes before it was due to start. I was pinning my number on as the race organiser was giving instructions. Not ideal conditions really! Found the course a real challenge but pleased with my time (41.27 over 5.25 miles) and looking forward to the rest of the season. Next race is on Wimbledon Common so hopefully a little easier course-wise.

Well done Motorbreath. Lloyd Park is one of the toughest. There are bigger hills on some of the others but not the continual undulation you get at Lloyd Park.
