Ah, I have never thought of mixing spikes before I may try that. Lloyd Park has a really anoying place where you cross a concrete path, just a few strides. Will have to bounce on my heels! I think I have 6 and 9s so may try putthing 9s at the front and then the 6s. I have Asic Hyper XC - not bad and can't justify new shoes at the moment.
Last year, I just ran to get around. I was really VERY slow. Can anyone recommend the kind of pace I should be aiming for in relation to my road racing pace. My road pace is about 7.5 min miles for the 5/6 mile courses and 7 min miles for 3 miles. Of course, I hope those will speed up after the XC season.

Depends how you run BS
I found xc really tough becuase I hardly lift my knees in road running - mostly I'm just flicking the ankles up and back. With XC I was running hills and through long grass so had to lift my knees high to clear grass, tree roots etc. That tired me out pretty fast.
I think the best thing to do is buddy up with someone from your club who runs a similar 5k road time to you and use them to judge your pace

BS
The distances are short, don't wear a garmin and just run as hard as the terrain allows. Pace takes care of itself offroad :¬)

No Garmin - yikes. Good for me though! I am trying not to use it on "as you feel runs" to reduce dependency on it as it felt like a total disaster when it died at the start of Loch Ness.

Gobi, are you sure that Nationals is OPEN. I was told that we had to enter a team for the regionals and then we could enter the Nationals

I can sort of do PAIN - but it will be slowly.
BS - We're in the Ladies Midland League, but the club also enters Midland counties, the Nationals and County Championship. Not got spikes for tomorrow - but will see how first outing goes and may invest!
Enjoying this thread!

Re. the english nationals. It is definitely open. Even the english cross country relays can be entered by any club.
Southern intercounties you can also run as an open race, although some counties select teams for it.
The national road relays are done by selecting clubs at regional championships.
