One of the ways this war will be ended, not going to say won, no one wins this. theguardian.com Until the average Russian city dweller is traveling by donkey Putin's strangle hold will continue. |

Exactly what all the leading Kremlinologists predicated when the war started. The general populace in the West really hasn't grasped how the war has instigated a brand new железный занавес (iron curtain), one that will inevitably lead to a stronger alliance between Russia and China, especially in trade. Dangerous.

Interesting article on the BBC site this morning. It's in Russian, so apologies for that .... the gist of it is that the Ukrainians are pursuing the possibility of trying Putin for war crimes in absentia.

It wasn't so long ago that Russia was fretting about China in the Far East. Most of Siberia is empty, and there are long-held fears of a gradual encroachment and takeover. I'm not convinced that Russia and China will become true and close friends. Both countries are run by men who like to be number one. If Putin's plan is to cuddle up to Xi Jinping, well, good luck with that mate. There's also the infrastructure issue. Most of the oil and gas is in western Siberia or the Arctic -- a very long way from China, across a lot of very difficult terrain. |

Apropos China, seems it's not too keen to help Putin circumvent sanctions: theguardian.com I think the flaw in Skidelsky's argument is that there's never been sanctions like these before and the aim is not regime change but to cripple the ability to wage war. |

I don't know if this is a little optimistic, but interesting nonetheless: dailykos.com |

Similarly, one would like to hope, given the apparently grim news from the Donbas front that we see on the telly. theconversation.com |

Interesting article Mutts, I'm a bit clueless on battlefield and land army stuff - this gives a good analysis and is a sobering read.

Re the artillery article, the Ukrainians are certainly using the increased range from the Nato-supplied guns. Every evening Russian TV complains of Donetsk itself being shelled. They always accuse the Ukrainians of targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure. A big fuss was made about a sports stadium in a nearby town being reduced to ash. Ukrainian reports said this was a Wagner base and a whole bunch of men and hardware got vaporised. Hard to know whom to believe, but the Ukrainians are certainly reaching far into separatist territory.
