kyivindependent.com Transnistria was eastern Moldova but high Russian population and been separated for years. 6000 Russian troops stationed there normally, but currently the Moldovans aren't trading with them creating shortages. It's near Odesa. |

Moldova knows that if Ukraine falls then they are next. Having a well provisioned Russian regiment or 2 inside their boarders isn't in their interests really |

However they're not trading with Transnistria, creating shortages which is why Transnistria has asked for Russian aid.

There is a Russian force there but it's not a combat-ready outfit and I think it's mostly manned by local conscripts. There's also a huge and decaying arms depot that if it goes bang will flatten the place for miles around. Imho this is just the Kremlin stirring the shit and serving a reminder that it could stir up trouble on the other side of Ukraine. It also controls a district of Georgia, South Ossetia, that has actually asked to be incorporated into Russia but is being kept on hold, presumably to be activated at a time that suits the Kremlin. Same with Transnistria, seems to me. I was watching Russian TV last night and it got barely a mention. |
