Moscow's line is that Kyiv was informed of the flight path in line with procedure for prisoner exchanges and shot it down either by accident or by design to try and blame the Russians. Kyiv seems to have initially claimed it as a hit and then rowed back when the reports of its POWs being on board emerged. Well, I dunno. Seems odd to be transporting POWs by air when troops generally move by rail in Russia. And there are all kinds of claims swirling around about the aircraft actually being on a return flight from Iran with weapons, flying in the wrong direction to be carrying POWs for an exchange, and so on. Russia has control of the crash site and video from there doesn't seem to show the numerous bodies you would expect to be scattered around (cf flight MH17). As so often with such things, and with Russia being involved, we will probably never know the truth although we can safely assume that Russia is lying. |

But it hasn't gone through. Cleared the Senate but needs to clear the House of Representatives as well, where there are many more of Trump's cringeing spineless toadies.

In other news, looks like the Ukrainians have promoted another Russian warship to submarine. A big one as well. reddit.com |

Apart from the obvious of destroying your enemy, what's the strategic value? Is it to stop Russia dropping troops off any where they want on the coast and was that something they were planning? Would Ukraine have been better of expending those resources blowing up and oil depot? |

It's about degrading logistics. These large landing ships are being used to ferry materiel and, reportedly, consignments of Iranian drones for use by Russian forces. There can't be too many of them left, and warships in the Black Sea cannot be replaced via the Bosporus because of the Montreux treaty. And then there's that bridge ... Russia is making tactical gains on land but Ukraine is pursuing a strategic plan at sea. |

Thanks for that excellent answer. So it's a troop ship/ freighter. Makes sense as to why. |
