I would die to save my wife or family NE. I just wouldn't kill to save them or anyone or anything. And if everyone had that attitude, there would be no wars. Yes. But they don't, unfortunately. Yours is an extremely idealistic view, but one of the great things about living in an enlightened democracy is that you're free to eschew that opinion, while living under the the protective umbrella of a country that is committed to protecting its citizens. |

And I did say that I recognise the service of those in the Armed Forces and am grateful for and respectful of them. While still disagreeing with our politicians sending them into kill zones far too often and too early. And generally spending too much on arms and wars. Anyway, I hope there can be a resolution to the Ukraine war Gaza war and other conflicts around the world. |

You did. There are some, less charitable than me, who might consider that a little on the hypocritical side and worse besides. In any case, I also hope that there is a speedy resolution to the various conflicts around the world, but hope is not a strategy and I am sorry to say that it's unlikely. Can I recommend you read Glenn's latest blog (if you haven't already), there's some well-written words there on the realities of things. So can we move away from personal views on pacifism now please? I understand that a thread like this is bound to attract that kind of thing, but there are other ways and places to express them. |

Just a word about sanctions - like so much politics there's a lot more talk than action. There's a Nissan factory here and most of the cars are for export - steering wheel on the left. A hefty amount of them used to go to Russia but since the invasion it was either not allowed or penalised. No problem, says Nissan. Cars now get exported to China, who IS doing business with Russia. |
