I do J2R. I used to run in Adidas tempo and Boston and these Hoka feel quite similar really, just with a little more kick.

Although I'm unlikely to be buying a pair, I'm interested in reading about them. Following on from the Guardian piece I've just read a few more articles including one with a top Canadian marathoner outsideonline.com and finishing with this one doctorsofrunning.com

tl/dr: it's the foam. Specifically, the PEBA foam.

The last article you linked specifically mentioned the Reebok Floatrides which use Pebax but have no plate, the author then hopes that Reebok can add a plate (I personally hope they keep them exactly the same). I guess it isn't just the foam then and the combination of everything...

In fact I might get scared into buying another pair now in case they do go down that route.

Extra 20% on Reebok sale today means I'm definitely getting another pair which will mean I have 2 new and one in use. The question now is whether I add a another pair to the order...

The last time I read anything interesting about this it *was* the foam contributing most of the performance gains, but the plate as a stability aspect was also key. Which is why I get wound up by journalists etc referring to the carbon plate as the spring which seems to do all the work, when it appears that that isn't the case. But I suppose a story which is effectively "new foam for shoes helps records get broken" isn't as interesting as "carbon spring propels runners foward" etc etc.

lark - agree, you've only got to compare the old ZF with the VF to realize where the zip came from, both with a C-plate but very different performance between

Dvorak - buy some and come over to the dark side, there's no way back :-)
