Just for you Oscar, I did my workout as a continuous tempo this evening. Only 5 miles but it came out as my best run for a while….it can be done 😀!!

Well done, WW!! I just need to put my big boy pants on. These things always seem worse than they are.

I did 4 miles tempo last night too - it's an offroad and undulating route so not a true representation of tempo pace, but the effort was definitely there and I'm making improvements, so that's what counts. I find it much easier if I arrange to run with clubmates, makes me accountable and even if I'm slower than they are, it's people to chase (though last night I actually overtook somebody!). Funnily enough the park where we do it was deserted at 6pm last night!!

Still find tempos relatively easy. It's the LSRs that do me in.

Chris - Then your Tempo's are too slow and your LSR's too fast ![]() |

My tempos are according to the books where they should be. And even if I drop the LSRs down to over 10 minute pace, they are highly problematic. My hamstrings and lower back just start seizing over the longer distance.

Well for Tempo's it pretty much in the definition for them to be uncomfortable (at least towards the end). LSR's there are other factors than pace so if you are sure the pace is right drop the distance until you finish feeling you could carry on with relatively ease for another couple of miles and repeat a few times then start building the distance again. Otherwise keep the distance and drop the pace. Of course the rest of your recent training will effect your fatigue levels and therefore your ability to hold the pace but a true LSR (long slow run) shouldn't be a hard effort and you should finish feeling able to continue. The old adage is time on your feet basically training to withstand repetitive impact and accumulated fatigue. |

Back on the "what is tempo". I think from past discussions it means different things to different coaches. Some use it to mean "steady but hard", some are more precise about "10 mile race pace", some link it to HR, some describe it as being one in the same as "threshold pace". So it depends which book you read! |
