There may be a bit of selection bias in people who post about their post-retirement life.
I used to admire (and thought of emulating) my FiL who kept working on a gradually decreasing basis up to his late 80s. Still do admire in some respects, but I just don’t feel at all like I should still be working away at science, the mere thought of it bores me. Done that, it’s time for other things! Currently over-run with rescue cats which is a more fun way of filling my time

You have to have dreams about what the future holds.
Unlikely they all happen but in some form they hopefully do.
Currently refuelling in a shady bar on the beachfront after a lengthy walk. This life would work for me.

Can you have a retirement flight path if you retire early? How is that different from just resigning? Do you have to be taking your state pension, or the occupational pension from the job you are leaving?

I don't know how you attest it Dio, but yes, I suppose theoretically you could say you were retiring, get the benefits from the company, and then join another company the next day. That's not in the spirit, but I don't know what checks there are. Perhaps you sign something that says "Not taking up another full time job in a similar industry with 12 months" or something?

Or just being a credible age e.g. over 55?

our work retirement plan requires 6mths notice and you have to be in service for X years and over Y age (can't remember details but older than me!)

I'm a weird one, because my "retiring" will be "stopping the job I do now and don't like much and do other, more fulfilling things, some of which may generate limited income".
But then I don't work for any company that is giving me any kind of retirement benefit! Just me choosing to see stopping as a benefit! G

My mum worked for the council and twelve months out from 65 she went to four days dropping to three for last six months. That was age dependent and when state pension age was 65.

Where I am (and where Happy is in indentured labour for the time being!) as a direct Employee you can Retire at 55, before that it's just Resigning!
Slightly better benefits around share options etc it you retire.
Currently we're working on developing some glide path/late career options - for my sins I'm now on the Baby Boomer Steering group who are promoting the ideas!

Lol 3M. I keep forgetting every time I say "I hate my job" that you are reading these!
I actually like the org I'm in now - people, values, offices, type of project I'm in, even my role. But it's just that IT generally, especially in large financial companies, isn't where I want to be. Out of 33 years of doing this and 15 different tenures, this is one of the better ones!
Anyhoo, that's enough brown-nosing! I want to be outdoors, helping people do new things. It's hard to that in IT in financial services! G
