There are many incompetent, difficult to get hold of and just fucking annoying organisations around, but HMRC stand alone as the worst.
It took 7 months to close my late wife’s estate and for them to calculate what was owed back to the estate in overpaid tax. That was a year ago, I’m still waiting for the actual payment.
I had about £4k in overpaid tax in my last tax return. I filed the return in May, knowing I was due a large return and wanting/needing it. Bastards didn’t pay out for 8 months. Took two phones calls to get it. And no interest or anything.
Now try owing them £4k, and see what happens….
Wankers.

6 months ago we were told that there was possibly an over payment of something on gran's estate She died a year ago now They have only just started to look into the bank statements So 6 months to get this far, maybe another 6 to go?!
Only then can the last of the money be given out

They sat on a tax overpayment relating to my sister’s estate for a year or so, maybe it was 18 months. That held up everything as charities were getting percentages (rather than fixed sums) and HMRC claimed they needed letters from the charities acknowledging receipt of the money that we didn’t yet have!
Estimating PAYE through job changes is always going to be a bit approximate of course, but they need enough staff to correct issues.

Pix - if you take another job before the end of the tax year your new employer may issue any tax refund with your first month's pay. There are limitations though and then HMRC will process refund, it's on the gov.uk website on the section about tax refunds that we looked at yesterday.
That's not good about your gran's estate taking so long.

I'll be handing my notice in next week to finish in June
Definitely 4-6 months off ideally more and I'll do my best to make it permanent!! If I do go back to work I will look at a swimming assistant role, rather than teacher, minimum salary but no stress!

I told mr pix that I “may be rash and use my aviva Ida and stay off longer” and he just nodded I’m hoping that when we finally get the rest of grand’s money he may relax (Ashe did say to you vrap “soon”). I think he’s just worried about having no income! 🤞🤞
