Funnily enough, of the three I picked up and read the first couple of pages of (I'm not fit enough to lift the Mantel at the moment), the Brookner was the most difficult to get into and too similar in tone to my previous read, whereas The Whale was the most immediately accessible. I ended up beginning the Le Carre.
