Bartering sounds good Hanneke! I do as much of my shopping in Lidl or Heron as I can and try to remember to go to places like B+M or Poundstretchers for household stuff. My bike is of the motorised variety so requires it's own insurance! I have toyed with the idea of cycling to work, but I really HATE cycling (I know, wash my mouth out!). I would also have the initial outlay of purchasing a bike as I don't currently own one. I agree that motoring costs are the biggest cost besides the rent. Clothes are bought from the charity shop etc etc. I'd LOVE some hens, but apart from the landlady already saying 'no' to that, my dog would get to eat them before I did... |

I just had to take out a new credit card. 0% fee, 0% on balance transfers and 0% on purchases. This is to cover all of the usual insurance things that happen at the start of the year. I usually would have saved up for those, but my savings went on the kitchen disaster and an accidental holiday to Portugal.

Yup, the car is the biggest expense for me too, but I can't get to work without one. It's too far to cycle (plus I hate cycling) and public transport takes 2 hours (rather than 35 mins) and costs a small fortune as well. It's a necessary evil. Along with the mortgage and utilities it's one of the non-negotiables.

I live in the sticks. Advantage is I can grow my own veg and cost of living is low, disadvantage is I NEED a car! I own my house and fortunately had been overpaying on my flexible offset mortgage while I was still employed, so have been able to drop monthly payments and still not ending up in arears. SO glad I had the foresight to do that! It also means I have an emergency fund in case my very old car that has done almost 150.000 miles develops a terminal mechanical for example. Fingers crossed I won't need to draw back down on what I already paid off though... |

I've pared everything back, so not sure what I can save on. Planning an Ebay session for some clothes - 1 coat, 1 jacket and a dress. Garden is being planned for planting but it's v small, so I can't fit lots of stuff in. Plenty of space for pots in my laundry drying area. Lots of work needs doing on my flat, so I need to find a sparks and a maintenance person who have dogs. I'm a pro dog walker, so could exchange dog care for flat works ... |

Hanneke I live in North Yorkshire, just outside Thirsk (think James Herriot!) far too many personalised number plates around here. I decided to go to the race and I'm glad I did! Ok, I would have saved a bit on petrol money, but I would have spent the day moping around being miserable. Whereas I am knackered, but happy. |
