bigleggy. No I am not in this but I just looked on in curiosity. The ones in the pics on this thread truly dwarf what we have in our garden and they are my wife's pet project, even though I do like them - I am trying to grow "pathetic vegetables" at the moment! about 20 years ago when we lived in a different area we did manage some massive (8 ft. - no exaggeration) sunflowers. different soil and against a south facing wall.

I'm now in the odd position of changing plants. My second biggest plant has had a growth spurt and is now my tallest plant.
Think the original biggest plant peaked too early, the head has formed and the flower is starting to die away. It's also stopped chasing the sun across the sky.
But I'm playing a dangerous game now - 2 massive plants in the same pot are making it very top heavy. Any kind of strong winds could spell disaster. Might have to rig up some tethering this weekend

Wriggling Snake
I am not going to win, the flower heads are tiny, I have hope, forlorn as it may be...

Mine has definitely peaked. It's beautiful at the moment but won't be by mid-September. Is the competition going to be what the sunflower actually looks like on the day (15th September) or the best it's achieved up to that date?

Does it have to be self-supporting, or can I keep my helpful blue stick?
Mine is putting on a late spurt, and has grown a second head. The new head points upwards, searching for the sun. The old head just glumly stares at the ground.

Doesn't have to self-support Pou-Pou - Blue sticks are allowed Mine is supported by 2 bamboo canes.
Got home last night and noticed that my pot had been moved. Asked OH why,
'It fell over'
Luckily no damage done - so I've added 3 housebricks to the pot in a bid to stop a repeat !!!
