Hi, I had flu last Xmas (in bed for 1 week, 1 month recuperating, no running for 2 months) - was a bit nasty. Phoned the GP today to ask about flu jab, but I'm not eligible coz i'm not asthmatic or diabetic - fair do's. She said I can get a flu jab in Sainsburys(!) or Asda(!)
Now, my question is, willl last years flu have given me any immunity, so is it not worth getting one, or should I hedge my bets and have one, or should I not bother? I most certainly will do whatever i can to make sure I don't get the flu again. Didn't like it.

As I understand it, a flu jab only lasts 12 months or so and each year they tweak the vaccine so it hits the most prevalent flu viruses around at the moment. There are usually a flu bugs around and the ones circulating this year may not be the same as last year's, so there's no guarantee that having had flu will give you ongoing immunity. I get the jab every year as I'm asthmatic, and would recommend it to anyone.

I think it's well worth the £7 in Asda
(The advertising outside our nearest Asda has had the effect of getting our target patients thinking, "That's something people PAY for and I can get it for free, eh? I'm going down the doctor's.)

Is there a significant risk of going down with "something" after getting the jab.?
I want to get the jab ASAP (Fri or Sat ) as it is the only convenient time but have a longish race on Sunday and don't want to suffer a reaction and it prevent me running my best ever race.

There is no more risk, statistically, of going down with "something" immediately after the jab compared with immediately after not having the jab

Last time I had flu I had it at Christmas in my own time. 3 days in bed and if I have to have it I'd like to have one lot in works' time.

A Doc friend gave me a way of telling Flu from a Cold: If there is £100 at the bottom of your garden could you muster up the will to go get it? Yes = a cold, No = Flu. I have had Flu in the last 10 years and never want it again!
