57.5 Degrees of Pain
Given the scarcity of European Fetchies, perhaps the person who takes it to the coast picks a new direction for it. So in this case, either North, South, or West. Perhaps I can rename them the Gold, Silver, Blue and Red relays.
They still need a direction attached or they could wander Bedfordshire forever ;) .

Sam Jelfs could have picked up the East baton, taken it to Meriden, and seen how far back east it could get in one shift.

They still would - but maybe more like "Gold Relay - Currently Travelling: EAST".

Make them cyclical. Hit a coast then turn a corner. N - E - S - W. Or N - W - S - E.

That removes that little incentive for the carrier to get them all the way to the coast.

What if they end up in a dead end? It's a long way back from Lands End to head for Ardnamurchan! ;)

I guess you run it to the sea again and then make a better choice for your new direction.

You could choose a destination (not direction) at random, or perhaps let it be the choice of the person who got the baton to the current destination.

I fancy taking it across! But my friend withe the sailing boat is still actively cancering, as am I. Plan had been to sail across, with my bike on board, then cycle it to my sister, which is near Sam Jelfs who can run a loooong way East ;)

That's if it's not be swallowed by a fish by now (after the storms) with it being at Ness Point.
