Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I'm in

For me the buzz is right here right now in breathing, being able to move, being able to write messages on an online forum, being able to experience the miracles of the cosmos in every second, knowing all my ups and downs are temporary and ultimately the same thing. The present moment is my only reality.

The rest is in my mind. There is a lot of history and conditioning in there. Which is why it's all so difficult and why I may reach for the alcohol free beer that still gives me a buzz. Or the biscuits. Or the phone. Or the coffee. Or the edibles. Or the chamomile. Dare I say the running shoes? Thing is it is nuanced, what has a negative impact for me, may not for another, what has a negative impact today may not tomorrow. Yesterday I had two biscuits. It felt right at the time. It still does. There was anxiety, I know where two biscuits have led previously. If I made the same choice today it could be the opposite. I may not be able to stop at two. It may lead to weeks of poor consumption. It still may. It may be the opposite for somebody else. Is not just about how having two biscuits or not may affect me physically though, it's the mental aspect, the knock on affect of these decisions on my loved ones. Where it may lead. No consumption decision is totally black or white, good or bad, right or wrong. All I have is my awareness. One day at a time.

I'm just addicted to escaping the fear that tomorrow may be as bad as yesterday or today. To not stopping. To not feeling. To suppressing. Billions of pounds are spent persuading me to do just that.

And feeling can be really hard. I'm so glad I make the decisions I do regards consumption more often than not now but boy do I feel more than I ever did and often look at others who still consume in ways I once did, I still do sometimes with food and screens, and think that was it sometimes easier back when I suppressed everything? One could argue that I am addicted to consuming and living mindfully now. It certainly still comes with it's fair share of suffering and suppression.

All opinions only. In this moment. My truth is ever changing. Thankfully. What a beautiful world.

Big love beautiful family x

Big love to all you amazing beings.

About This Thread

Maintained by HappyG(rrr)
Looks as though this thread has become popular again, here in 2010 (it's now 2024, and it started in 2008, so I think "ever popular" might be more apt! :-) G ) :-) Good Luck everyone.

A recent plea for those struggling to "reach out" as they say in US of A!

"Anyone not feeling strong and confident, please shout out. Or fmail. Or any other comms that works. Don't drink alcohol when you don't want to, for lack of someone to talk to. Pick up the phone, not the bottle."

Some acronyms, in case people use them:
JFT - Just for today
ODAAT - One day at a time
KIS - Keep it simple
TBOGUA - The Benefits Of Giving Up Alcohol (the title of this thread!)

New feature: article/blog of the month (period may change randomly!) Swittle's wonderful 14,611 days blog: (see links below)

Linking Joopsy's 17 year blog too, cos it's awesome!

There is a GREAT article summarising some of the benefits, to save you having to trawl through the thread (includes links to helpful apps and other resources).

And a great list of Alternative Drinks started by the lovely LindsD:

Please add to these articles and make them as valuable as possible! Thanks! :-) G

And one from way back when...
Dirt Monkey's brilliant blog on TBOGUA too - go try this...

Rebel has recommended a couple of good books:

A great response from a health professional in Ireland responding to a question from a Guardian reader about why the warnings on alcoholic drinks that are coming in:

theguardian.com

"Alcohol is responsible for at least 1,000 cancer cases every year in Ireland, with one in eight breast cancer cases arising from alcohol use. Even one to two drinks per day increases the risk of developing cancer, and that risk is the same whether those drinks are wine, spirits or beer. Unfortunately, there is a very low level of public awareness that alcohol has been classed as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning it is carcinogenic to humans. That is why Ireland has passed legislation that provides for health information labels on alcohol products, including warnings about cancer, liver disease and the danger of drinking in pregnancy. It is unsurprising that the alcohol industry, which promotes its products with carefully crafted myths of good times for all, is objecting to the mandatory provision of facts (Anger brews in Italy over Ireland’s plans for alcohol health warnings, 12 January).
