Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

8 years LindsD amazing.
I’m having a great 2022 so far.

I ran my fastest parkrun of the year yesterday and so far I’m alcohol free.

Congratulations on your 8 years LindsD. I remember when you first gave up and I kept trying to and not succeeding but I’m succeeding now 😀

Merry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr)
Wow Linds, well done. I remember first chatting about it. Amazing how it can just become "natural" isn't it? Congrats.

I forgot to buy alcohol for visitors yesterday! First time. Usually for Christmas / New Year visitors I've still got this attitude of "must have booze in". And as we were talking about a few weeks ago, I've now discovered that previous years' drinks have expiry dates and have had to pour dozens of bottles down the drain!

But this year, people just had to make do with whatever they brought or what we had.

MrsS(rrr) was brill - she did the food shopping and bought drinks - elderflower, Tanqueray 0.0% and Fever Tree tonics in various flavours. heart

So the guests had one bottle of prosecco between 3 of them, that they brought themselves!

And neighbours who gave us bottles for Christmas got biscuits from us! I may have turned another corner. Who knew there were any left?! This journey just keeps on surprising! :-) G

Nice one happy. I think it’s acceptable for folk to bring their own. We’d never buy cigarettes or other drugs for guests would we?

Merry Christmas and Happy NewG(rrr)
Good point Loobs. Never thought about it like that before. The culture that it's "hospitable" to offer alcohol to people coming to your house is... weird, really!

Dio, great stuff mate. Today's a good day to not have a drink! :-) G

I was being a bit tongue in cheek but it’s food for thought.
Nice one Dio.

HappyG, one of my bug bears is that people I have known for a long time and know I dont drink never by drinks in specifically for me, no AF drinks and sometimes not even a sugar free coke. But they clearly expect there to be alcohol for them when they visit.

I like your thinking though :)

Looks as though this thread has become popular again, here in 2010 (it's now 2024, and it started in 2008, so I think "ever popular" might be more apt! :-) G ) :-) Good Luck everyone.

A recent plea for those struggling to "reach out" as they say in US of A!

"Anyone not feeling strong and confident, please shout out. Or fmail. Or any other comms that works. Don't drink alcohol when you don't want to, for lack of someone to talk to. Pick up the phone, not the bottle."

Some acronyms, in case people use them:
JFT - Just for today
ODAAT - One day at a time
KIS - Keep it simple

New feature: article/blog of the month (period may change randomly!) Swittle's wonderful 14,611 days blog: (see links below)

Linking Joopsy's 17 year blog too, cos it's awesome!

There is a GREAT article summarising some of the benefits, to save you having to trawl through the thread (includes links to helpful apps and other resources).

And a great list of Alternative Drinks started by the lovely LindsD:

Please add to these articles and make them as valuable as possible! Thanks! :-) G

A great response from a health professional in Ireland responding to a question from a Guardian reader about why the warnings on alcoholic drinks that are coming in:

theguardian.com

"Alcohol is responsible for at least 1,000 cancer cases every year in Ireland, with one in eight breast cancer cases arising from alcohol use. Even one to two drinks per day increases the risk of developing cancer, and that risk is the same whether those drinks are wine, spirits or beer. Unfortunately, there is a very low level of public awareness that alcohol has been classed as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning it is carcinogenic to humans. That is why Ireland has passed legislation that provides for health information labels on alcohol products, including warnings about cancer, liver disease and the danger of drinking in pregnancy. It is unsurprising that the alcohol industry, which promotes its products with carefully crafted myths of good times for all, is objecting to the mandatory provision of facts (Anger brews in Italy over Ireland’s plans for alcohol health warnings, 12 January).
