Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Hi Pikelet. Most welcome. Cut downer, abstainers we love em all!

I am quite shocked by how important procuring alcohol and getting hammered seem to be to so many in coping with current crisis. Sad really.

Lots of great kindness and hard work happening too of course. Well done all the key workers at this tough time. Huge gratitude. :-) G

this is definately a time when it would be easy it slip into unwanted habits. As a cut downer i had very clear definitions of when a drink was ok and when it wasn't. These boundaries need to be thought about. As I only drank occasionally when out, and not at home and now I won't be out maybe it will total abstainence for the duration.

shanksi drank a bottle of red wine last night and I couldn't even stand the smell of it. Certainly didn't make me want a glass.

Saddened perhaps but not at all shocked by people turning to drink in both small and large quantities. It's been a major shock and worry for many and will continue to be so. I hope the abstainers can continue to find strength and perhaps distractions/alternative strategies as they have probably already developed.

Hi Pikelet. Welcome.

Was shocked to see Virgin Wines were offering £10 in everyone's accounts yesterday. Then an apology email this morning to say their website has gone down. Definitely worrying that they seem to have been so inundated. I was going to cancel ours (12 bottles a quarter), but that's not fair on OH. I've mostly stuck to one bottle a week and only at weekends rule, which I think is a reasonable level for me, for now. Did also get some non-alcoholic alternatives in as I don't drink tea or coffee, so I get bored of water and milk all the time.

Yes, shanksi wouldn't normally drink a bottle of wine in one night like that, I think it was because of the situation. He won't buy any for a while, it was in the house already.

We used to get Laithwaites wine delivered but we stopped that because when the box arrived we'd be tempted to drink too much.

Of all the worries for me to have at the moment i'm glad that buying wine isn't one of them. I'm lucky in that my OH can take it or leave it. He'll have one bottle of Peroni and that's him done. If he has one at home he usually has a cup of tea on the go with it at the same time :-)

I'm really not bothered about non-alco alternatives. I hate lager and most of the decent ones seem to be based around that. In the words of Jesse from The Fast Show 'this week I'll mostly be drinking coffee'.

Looks as though this thread has become popular again, here in 2010 (it's now 2024, and it started in 2008, so I think "ever popular" might be more apt! :-) G ) :-) Good Luck everyone.

A recent plea for those struggling to "reach out" as they say in US of A!

"Anyone not feeling strong and confident, please shout out. Or fmail. Or any other comms that works. Don't drink alcohol when you don't want to, for lack of someone to talk to. Pick up the phone, not the bottle."

Linking Joopsy's 17 year blog too, cos it's awesome!

There is a GREAT article summarising some of the benefits, to save you having to trawl through the thread (includes links to helpful apps and other resources).

A great response from a health professional in Ireland responding to a question from a Guardian reader about why the warnings on alcoholic drinks that are coming in:

theguardian.com

"Alcohol is responsible for at least 1,000 cancer cases every year in Ireland, with one in eight breast cancer cases arising from alcohol use. Even one to two drinks per day increases the risk of developing cancer, and that risk is the same whether those drinks are wine, spirits or beer. Unfortunately, there is a very low level of public awareness that alcohol has been classed as a Group 1 carcinogen, meaning it is carcinogenic to humans. That is why Ireland has passed legislation that provides for health information labels on alcohol products, including warnings about cancer, liver disease and the danger of drinking in pregnancy. It is unsurprising that the alcohol industry, which promotes its products with carefully crafted myths of good times for all, is objecting to the mandatory provision of facts (Anger brews in Italy over Ireland’s plans for alcohol health warnings, 12 January).
